The Westmoreland Historical Society (WHS) is planning special activities at Historic Hanna’s Town as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. Over the next year and a half, the WHS will help the public explore the motivations for the drive to independence and the Revolutionary War history of Westmoreland County and Southwestern Pennsylvania. Historic Hanna’s Town is the only site open to the public in Westmoreland County that focuses on the western campaign of the Revolutionary War and life on the frontier during that period.

Join us for an exciting family friendly 5K Run or Walk with a Kids Dash and then immediately following will the Resolves Reenactment event.

Resolves Event (11AM – 3PM)

As we begin the commemoration of America’s 250th birthday, a special event will take place at Historic Hanna’s Town on Saturday May 17, 2025, to honor the 250th anniversary of the Hanna’s Town Resolves, a bold precursor to the Declaration of Independence.

News of the events at Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, reached the frontier of Western Pennsylvania in mid-May.  The residents of Westmoreland County gathered at Hanna’s Town on May 16, 1775, to discuss how they should react to these events.

They drafted the “Hanna’s Town Resolves”, where they unanimously declared their willingness to fight and protect their rights but stopped short of declaring independence from Great Britain.  This May 17th, reenactors will give a plausible recreation of the discussion based on our knowledge of the culture and motivations revealed in other writings of the 18th century residents of Westmoreland County.

Bring your friends and family to learn about the frontier’s role in the push for independence.  Enjoy reenactments of the Resolves’ adoption and special living history demonstrations and displays featured that day from 11AM – 3PM.
